WIP: More DV Cultist Conversions

Remember how I hate duplicate sculpts? Well, my quiet rage drove me to convert every other cultist in my DV starter set.
I really had no choice with all the great cultist conversions I had seen recently. So let's dive in and see what I ended up with after dipping into the 'ol bitz boxes...

We'll start off with our assault based cultists first. A couple of mutations, head swaps and gun & blade revisions; plus a guardsmen's helmet. Did he loot it or turn traitor I wonder?  Best not to get close enough to ask ;)
Everyday...
...I'm...
... shufflin', shufflin'!
Next up is the ranged combat cultists. Again, head swaps and some light gun conversions were really all it took to make them look different enough that when I paint them up they'll still look like a unit but not exact doubles.
The last thing built was the Hellbrute. Surprisingly he's one of only 5 minis I didn't convert in any way. I was tempted, but I really like the chaos sculpts and think they will fit nicely with the Night Lords aesthetic of terror and brutal violence.

Next post I'll have the finished pics of my entry for the STC Chaos Champion Contest. Plus, a few shots of some of the more interesting bases I assemble for my DV minis; which are now all built and ready for priming. No more conversions for a little while, I promise.  Speaking of conversions.... Have you seen this kit-bashed Thunderhawk at Calth Burns? Incredible AND reasonably affordable compared to the Forge World version - which I love, but cannot bring myself to part with nearly $800 CDN to buy. Frozen Reflection you totally blew my mind! Also Old School Terminator is at it again with a cool Helldrake conversion over at Dark Future Games. So much great stuff out there! Please check out my blog roll to find more on other sites because I'm always adding to it.

Thanks for visiting and remember; you can't spell paint without a little pain.

  1. Great conversions, Zab! I jumped in and painted up my set right away without doing anything special to the sculpts, but have been regretting it after seeing all the cool kitbashes people have been doing.

    Keep up the great work!

  2. Thanks! I guess it's the benefit of my moving at a snail's pace - time to steal - um, i mean borrow other's cool ideas.

  3. Been enjoying your conversions with the Dark Vengeance models. I hear you on having unique models. My current army that I am working on has taken that one step further by limiting the use of helmets and maximizing the use of unique faces. The odd unit does where all the same type of helmet but they are honour guard and or specialized units. The rest of the army is exposed faces each different then every other one in the horde.

    1. Thanks. That must be tough with a horde type army. I thought my bitz were extensive but realized that if i ever add more cultists i will probably have to kit bash from fantasy or even (pause for dramatic effect) use 3rd party bitz!

    2. I am using Fantasy bits myself. Flagellants, Empire Wizards, Marauders, Chaos Knights and some third party bitz for heads. Toss in ghouls, zombies, spawn and Forgeworld bitz for arms and accessories.

    1. Thanks. They were fairly simple too. It was just getting over the initial fear of "what if i can't make this work?" ~Snip!~ I am racing through the basing (which rhymes). I can't wait to put paint to mini either.

  5. I like this article very much, cause so everyone can build a cheap 40k army and this, without having the same miniatures a houndred times in their army. Great Work and Inspiration :)

    1. Thank you . I agree, there is nothing worse than showing up to a game night and seeing 3-4 of the same units in every other army.
